Knipmode pattern review plans

KM1509-24 and KM1509-25

Following a restyling Dutch pattern magazine Knipmode now offers all patterns in eleven sizes, from European size 34 up to European size 54 (131 cm / 51.5″ bust, 113 cm / 44.5″ waist and 138 cm / 54.3″ hip). Most of the patterns are also available as PDF downloads. If you're interested you can read my full review at the Curvy Sewing Collective

I''ve been asked to write a follow up post for the CSC once I've tested some of the patterns. That'll be fun! There are more than a few patterns in the September issue that caught my eye, but for the sake of curvy science I narrowed my options down to the form fitting top and skirt pictured above.

It may be interesting to compare the skirt pattern to that of Vogue 1465, a Donna Karan pattern that was in my mail yesterday.

Vogue 1465

I don't expect the Knipmode patterns to fit differently compared to earlier offerings, so for those of you having a hard time imagining what the patterns will look like when you're not a size zero model, here's a quick round up of 'Knip-on-curves' . The dresses were made before I owned a tripod and remote control. (Not much use in this context, but they happen to be my favourite patterns and I needed six pictures for the collage ;)

Clockwise: jacket, top, skirt, dress, blouse, dress, all made recently from Knipmode patterns

The weather forecast for this weekend is pretty bad, perfect for tracing and testing.

Happy sewing!

  1. I love this black and white blouse and the silver skirt! Do you alter their patterns a lot?

Oh, Marianne, I would be so interested in more KnipMode reviews! Please please, we need more information about it! There are many Burda and La Mia Boutique reviews, but more we know about other magazines, the better! So far, I've used only two of their patterns, but I'd like to do more!

    1. Hi Inna! I always like your (p)review of Burda but never thought of doing the same for Knipmode! I'll keep it up for the next few months, especially since both the extended size range and the availability of pdf patterns makes reviews interesting for foreign sewists too. As for the fit, I've been working with Knipmode patterns for forty years now. When I was younger they drafted for 168 cm height (I'm 173) so I just added some length and otherwise the fit was spot on. Fast forward a few decades and a few pounds, (actually more than a few) I went up some sizes and work with my standard set of adjustments. Nothing too bad, FBA, sway back, forward shoulders. On the upside Knipmode is now drafting for 172 cm. Win!

  2. I enjoyed your article on CSC. I've never used Knipmode (or even seen the magazine). I believe that Dutch and German RTW clothing fits me better than UK RTW - perhaps because I'm tall 179 cm and now have those few extra pounds you mentioned! The availability of PDF makes these patterns worth considering. I'll be guided by your reviews. I look forward to your further articles. Thank you.

    1. You're welcome! I think it's a good thing when sewists discuss the pros and cons of available patterns. Knipmode fits me better than Burda, not in the least because of the 172 height vs Burda's 168 cm!

    1. Hi Sarah! I love the Knipmode top you've made, that neckline is really beautiful! Thanks for the glossary, I won't need it myself as a native Dutch speaker, but it can be a good resource for some of my sewing friends. If you need any additional help for translating instructions you now know how to find me ;) My review of the October issue will be up next week!
